How Much Does a Locksmith Cost When you cant Find Your Keys ?

Last Updated: Jun 29, 2015 by Rob Schneider

There are two times when you need the services of a locksmith fast: when you need a new key and when you lock yourself out of your home, office or vehicle. If you just need a spare key, you’re in luck. Keys can be relatively inexpensive. If you need emergency locksmith service, expect to pay considerably more. How much they will cost depends on the locksmith you contact, the time of day or night, and the difficulty of the job. Knowing what locksmiths charge in advance will help you get the service you need at the best possible price.
Locksmith Services

A qualified locksmith does more than just sit behind a counter making replacement keys. Some of the jobs a locksmith does outside the shop include:

  • Rekeying existing locks
  • Removal of broken keys
  • Lock system installation
  • 24/7 emergency services
  • Lockout services

These jobs require travel and work time. If you need their services during normal working hours, they will charge a standard call out and/or hourly rate. If you need a locksmith in the middle of the night or on a holiday, they will charge a higher rate.
How Much Does a Locksmith Cost?*

In metropolitan areas, the average cost of a locksmith is $60 an hour. Locksmiths generally charge a higher call-out rate for the first hour. Some typical call-out rates for unlocking a door might be:

  • $135 during normal working hours (9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.)
  • $175 on weekdays just before or after normal working hours
  • $220 between 9:00 p.m. and midnight
  • $330 after midnight

The prices can be much higher if the locksmith has to travel far to reach your home.

If you’re locked out of your home or car after midnight, you have no choice but to call an emergency locksmith. The best way to avoid the high cost of an after hours lockout service is to have a spare key and keep it in a safe place.

The cheapest way to get a spare key is to take your key to the locksmith and have them make a duplicate key. If this is not possible, you can take the lock to the locksmith and they can make a key for you (this is called “re-pinning”). If you are able to do this, they might charge $10 to $20 for the service. If they have to come to your home to do the re-pinning, it will cost at least their normal call-out rate.
